Eleanor Ellis Public Library, along with sponsorship from the Phelps Women’s Club, will once again host our annual Creative Writing Contest, with a submission deadline of Friday, March 15, 2024. This contest is open to kids and adults who reside in Phelps and Northland Pines School Districts.

This year’s theme is Poetry. Poems are judged based on originality, creativity, and artistic quality. Poems containing profanity, vulgarity or offensive material are automatically disqualified.

  • Only original materials may be entered.

  • Entries must not exceed 20 lines.

  • We will not accept AI submissions.

  • Only one entry per poet

Writers can submit their work by mail, drop off at the library or email to director@phelps.wislib.org. With your entry, please include your name, age, address and phone number.

Contest Divisions and Prizes

Grades K-2 – First Place: 10 pc Wooden Percussion Set w/ Draw-string Carrying Bag Second Place: 37-Key Electronic Keyboard with Percussion. Third Place: Hape Blue Hand-held Wooden Harmonica for beginners.

Grades 3-5 First Place: Electronic, 9-pad Roll-up, Drum Set with Headphones. Second Place: Soprano Ukulele, African Red Mahogany Kit with Case Third Place: 4 Drum, Hand Drum Set, Birch Frame, Sizes: 10″, 8″, 6″ 4″ and Drum Sticks.

Grades 6-8First Place: East Top of the Line Professional Blues Harmonica with Case and Book. Second Place: 32 -Key Melodica Air Piano w/ Carrying Bag. Third Place: Muaro Steel and Brass Jaw/Mouth Harp with Dark Wooden Case and Instructional Book.

Grades 9-12 First Place: AKLOT Steel Tongue Drum Kit w/Drum Mallets, Finger Picks and Gig Bag Second Place: Kalimba Thumb Piano with Case and Instructional Book Third Place: Ocarina, 12-tone, Ceramic, Potato Flute with Case, Neck Strap and Booklet.

Adult Contest (ages 18 and up) – Best Overall Pick – $100
